Updated 21 October 2026. Package details are from Fjord Tours and Visit Bergen, boat times from the operator, Norway’s Best, and train facts from Vy, Flåmsbana and Bane NOR.
Short answer: Norway in a Nutshell is a self-guided trip by train, boat and bus through the fjords between Bergen and Oslo. Visit Bergen lists the package from Bergen at 2,698 kroner for adults and 1,204 kroner for children under 16. You can also book the same trains, fjord boat and bus yourself.
If you only see one fjord in Norway, this is the classic way to do it. You ride the Bergen Railway into the mountains, take the steep Flåm Railway down to the fjord, sail through the narrow Nærøyfjord on an electric boat and loop back by bus and train. It works in winter too, with snow on the mountains and far fewer people.
The big question is whether to buy the package or book the pieces yourself. Here’s how I’d decide.
What
train, fjord boat and bus loop through the fjords
Package from Bergen
2,698 kr adults, 1,204 kr kids under 16
Runs
year-round, not 24, 25 Dec or 1 Jan
Day trip from Bergen
leaves about 08:00, back 18:00–21:00
Flåm Railway
about 55 minutes each way
Fjord boat
about 2 hours, Flåm to Gudvangen
The route
The trip has five legs. You can do the loop in either direction from Bergen, or go one way between Oslo and Bergen.
- Bergen Railway between Bergen and Myrdal, a mountain station high up on the line.
- Flåm Railway from Myrdal down to Flåm, about 55 minutes each way.
- Fjord boat between Flåm and Gudvangen through the Aurlandsfjord and the Nærøyfjord, about two hours.
- Bus between Gudvangen and Voss.
- Train between Voss and Bergen, on the Bergen Railway again.
The Nærøyfjord is on UNESCO’s World Heritage List together with the Geirangerfjord, since 2005. There’s no road along it, so a boat is the only way to see it properly.
Option 1: the Norway in a Nutshell package
Norway in a Nutshell is a registered product of Fjord Tours. You buy one package and get all the tickets for the trains, boat and bus, plus a travel plan. There’s no guide; you travel on the regular services with everyone else.
What Visit Bergen lists for the day trip from Bergen:
- Price from 2,698 kroner for adults and 1,204 kroner for children under 16 (prices may change).
- Departs Bergen station around 08:00 and returns between 18:00 and 21:00, depending on the season.
- Runs year-round, but not on 24 and 25 December or 1 January.
- You can add an overnight stay in Flåm or Gudvangen.
Fjord Tours also sells a winter version and lets you start in Oslo, Bergen, Voss, Geilo or Flåm.
Why I’d consider it:
- One booking. The connections are planned for you, which matters in winter, when some legs only run a few times a day.
- Help if something changes. If the weather changes the boat route, you’re dealing with one company.
- Kids’ price. Under-16s pay well under half the adult price.
Option 2: book it yourself (DIY)
Every leg of the trip is a public service you can book on your own:
- Bergen Railway trains: Vy (vy.no).
- Flåm Railway: Flåmsbana, or through Vy’s journey planner.
- Fjord boat Flåm–Gudvangen: Norway’s Best.
- Bus Gudvangen–Voss: check the regional journey planner.
Why I’d consider DIY:
- Flexibility. Stay a night in Flåm, spend longer at Myrdal or add a different fjord trip.
- Possible savings. Vy sells some train tickets at lower prices in advance, so booking early can bring the total down. I haven’t put a DIY total here, because the train fares change with the date and how early you book. Price your own dates on each site and compare with the package.
- You choose the boat. In winter there are two sailings each way, and you can pick the one that fits your trains.
The catch: you’re on your own if a connection is missed. In winter, with few departures, a late train can mean waiting hours for the next boat.
Winter boat times, 16 October 2026 to 31 March 2027
This is the key to planning any winter trip, because the boat runs only twice a day in each direction. Norway’s Best lists:
| Direction | Departs | Arrives |
|---|---|---|
| Flåm → Gudvangen | 09:30 | 11:30 |
| Flåm → Gudvangen | 14:45 | 16:45 |
| Gudvangen → Flåm | 12:00 | 14:00 |
| Gudvangen → Flåm | 17:15 | 19:15 |
The boat can also stop at Aurland, Undredal, Dyrdal and Styvi, but only if you book those stops before it leaves. The operator warns that in winter the route can change at short notice because of the weather. Then the boat does a round trip from Flåm, with a connecting bus between Gudvangen and Flåm.
The Flåm Railway in winter
The Flåm Railway runs every day in winter. Bane NOR’s timetable for the new timetable period from 13 December 2026 shows the winter service running daily until 31 March, with some departures not running on 24 and 25 December. The trip takes about 55 minutes each way. Check Vy’s journey planner for the exact departure times on your date.
Two ways to plan the day from Bergen
Clockwise (boat at midday): morning train from Bergen to Voss, bus to Gudvangen, the 12:00 boat to Flåm (arriving 14:00), the Flåm Railway up to Myrdal, then the train back to Bergen in the evening.
Counterclockwise (boat in the afternoon): early train from Bergen to Myrdal, the Flåm Railway down to Flåm, lunch in Flåm, the 14:45 boat to Gudvangen (arriving 16:45), the bus to Voss and the train back to Bergen.
Either way, build the day around the boat, then fit the trains and bus to it. If you’re booking DIY, I’d leave a buffer of at least an hour before the boat.
Should you stay overnight?
With kids, I’d seriously think about it. The day trip from Bergen can run from about 08:00 to 21:00, which is long for young children, and in winter most of the return is in the dark. A night in Flåm splits the day in two, and you see the fjord in morning light. Both the package and the DIY route make that easy.
Oslo to Bergen through the fjords
If you’re traveling between the two cities anyway, the one-way version makes a lot of sense. Take the Bergen Railway from Oslo to Myrdal, go down the Flåm Railway, sail to Gudvangen, then take the bus to Voss and the train on to Bergen. The direct Oslo–Bergen train takes about 6.5 to 7.5 hours, so the fjord detour turns a long travel day into the highlight of the trip.
My pick
- Package if it’s your first time in Norway, you’re traveling in winter, or you have young kids and want the connections sorted.
- DIY if you want to stay overnight in the fjords, are traveling outside the holidays and like to book things yourself.
Either way, it’s the same trains and the same boat. You’ll see the same fjord.
What to wear in winter
- Warm layers. Myrdal is high in the mountains and much colder than Bergen.
- Waterproof jacket and shoes for Bergen and the fjord villages.
- Hat and gloves for the boat’s outside deck.
